  • FAQs – Can I install a gas boiler in new builds still?
The answer is yes – but it is becoming more difficult!

This has been a pertinent question, ever since the government announced its intentions to eventually phase out gas boilers.

Whilst the new Part L Regulations do not rule out gas boilers, the notional model within SAP will apply a significant Solar PV system & waste water heat recovery system when a gas boiler is selected.

This is effectively the specification that is generating the compliance targets – meaning that, in reality, the dwelling will require these systems in order to pass.

This is a significant uplift from the previous Part L standards, whereby a gas boiler alone was the notional standard.

The main alternative to this option, is to install an air source heat pump as the space/water heating system. This will often mean that solar panels & waste water heat recovery can be avoided.

In Summary – gas boilers CAN still be installed in new build properties, under the updated 2021 Part L Building Regulations. They will however, need to be accompanied with Solar Panels and Waste Water Heat Recovery.
