Sound Testing for Building Regulations

THE BRIEF

  • We were instructed by a Property Management Company to complete a Comprehensive range of Sound Insulation Tests for Building Regulations on this block of flats
  • The test schedule consisted of a mixture of Airborne Floor, Impact Floor and Airborne Party Wall tests
  • To pass these Airborne tests, you must score 43db or higher
  • Airborne tests measure the difference in sound levels between the receiver room and neighbouring walls or floors
  • If the sound output in the receiver room is 100db and the sound leakage being passed through into the neighbouring room is 40db, then the result would be 60 and therefore would be a pass
  • Impact tests need a score of 64db or lower to pass
  • These Impact tests measure how effectively the Sound Insulation between floors cancels out sound. If there is less than 64 decibels of sound leaking through into below floors then these tests would be a pass
